The Nigeria Senators have generously contributed N74m to aid the victims of the catastrophic flood that devastated Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, last week.
Senator Barau I Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, revealed this on behalf of Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, the President of the Senate, during a visit to Maiduguri on Tuesday.
Senator Barau announced that each of the 108 senators would donate N500,000 (totaling N54m), while he personally pledged N10m. Additionally, the Northern Senators Forum contributed N10m, bringing the total donation to N74m.
The Senators, received by Governor Professor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, included distinguished members such as Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Southern Senators Forum, Senator Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara Central), Senator Onawo Mohammed Ogoshi (Nasarawa South), and Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (Kwara North).
Senator Barau expressed heartfelt condolences to the Borno State Government and the entire populace for the tragic flood incident.
“We are here to extend our condolences and sympathies to you and the entire state for the recent calamitous flood in this beautiful Borno. The impact on Borno resonates throughout the country. Hence, I am accompanied by some esteemed colleagues, despite the President of the Senate’s visit yesterday representing the Senate as a whole.
Traditionally, in such circumstances, even when a leader has conveyed condolences, it is customary for those under him to individually or collectively offer their sympathies to the affected. We stand in solidarity with you and pray that those who perished find peace in paradise. May the injured swiftly recover, and may those who lost possessions retrieve them promptly.
“Yesterday, the President of the Senate did not disclose our intended donation. The plight of the victims deeply moves us. Following our deliberations, we have decided to donate N54,000,000 (Fifty Four Million Naira). Each senator’s contribution amounts to N500,000, totaling N54m.
“Personally, I am contributing N10 million. Let us pray that such floods do not revisit Borno State or any part of our nation,” he expressed.
The Senators also paid respects to Senator Baba Kaka Garbai, who represented Borno Central in the Eighth Senate, following the passing of his mother last week.
