Nigeria has reiterated its strong commitment to restoring peace and stability in Sudan, while raising concerns over external interference prolonging the conflict and threatening regional security.
The assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a courtesy visit by Sudan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ambassador Ahmed emphasised that Nigeria remains firmly supportive of efforts aimed at ending hostilities in Sudan through dialogue and inclusive political processes. He noted that both Nigeria and Sudan share longstanding historical and cultural ties rooted in centuries of migration, interaction, and cooperation, with mutual interests in regional peace and development.
In his remarks, Ambassador Abdelaal highlighted the deep integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society and provided updates on the situation in his country, including ongoing recovery efforts in conflict-affected areas. While acknowledging some progress in restoring stability, he expressed concern about continued external interference, warning that it risks prolonging the crisis and undermining peace efforts.
Both diplomats stressed that the situation in Sudan has far-reaching implications for Africa, particularly within the Sahel region, and called for sustained diplomatic engagement to prevent further destabilisation.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s role on the continental stage, Ambassador Ahmed noted the country’s active engagement within the African Union and the broader international community in advocating for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The meeting also focused on strengthening bilateral relations, with discussions on convening the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address shared priorities. Plans for a high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria were also considered.

Additionally, both sides discussed measures to safeguard Nigerian assets in Sudan and provide necessary support to affected nationals amid the ongoing crisis.
The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment by both countries to deepen diplomatic ties and collaborate towards achieving lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
