The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has claimed more than 200 lives and left many others injured.
In a condolence message, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, conveyed Nigeria’s heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of the DRC, particularly the families of victims who lost their lives in the devastating incident. Nigeria also extended prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured and expressed solidarity with affected communities grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
The incident, which reportedly followed heavy rainfall, affected largely artisanal miners and nearby residents. Nigeria noted that the scale of the tragedy highlights the grave humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable populations in resource-rich regions, as well as the dangers linked to unsafe and informal mining practices.
Nigeria commended the efforts of local authorities and emergency responders involved in rescue and recovery operations, including the provision of medical care to the injured and measures taken to safeguard affected communities.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, assuring that the thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria remain with the DRC during this period of profound national grief.
