In a historic leap for Nigeria’s healthcare and education sectors, annual enrollment in nursing programs has skyrocketed from 28,000 in May 2023 to an unprecedented 115,000, marking a major milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
This remarkable increase is attributed to the President’s strategic initiative aimed at expanding access to medical education as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the health and education sectors.
He credited the achievement to close collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Education and Health and Social Welfare, led by Dr. Alausa and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
Aligned with the administration’s focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM), the government has exceeded its initial enrollment target of 110,000 nursing students annually—reaching 115,000 across nursing colleges nationwide.

Dr. Alausa extended appreciation to all stakeholders, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, teaching hospitals, industry leaders, and ministry personnel, for their pivotal roles in achieving this transformative goal.
This expansion in nursing education capacity heralds a new era for the profession in Nigeria, equipping the nation to meet both domestic and international demand for skilled healthcare workers.
