Nigeria Foreign Affairs Minister Leads Delegation to AU Executive Council Session, Champions African Unity
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, scheduled from 11th to 12th February 2026 at the AU Headquarters.
According to a statement by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Tuggar will participate in ministerial meetings, high-level dialogues, side events, and bilateral engagements aimed at advancing Africa’s unity, peace, security, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
Ambassador Tuggar was received on Monday, 9 February, by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Berhanu Tsegaye, alongside the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, Ambassador Nasir Aminu, and other mission staff.
The engagement precedes the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for 14th to 15th February. Nigeria’s participation will focus on peace and security, democratic governance, economic integration, development financing, health security, climate resilience, and the implementation of Agenda 2063.

On the margins of the Summit, Ambassador Tuggar is expected to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from African and non-African countries, strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic ties and promoting shared strategic interests. Nigeria will also host high-level side events, including a Nigerian-led session on regional partnerships for democracy, highlighting the country’s commitment to democratic norms and institutional strengthening across the continent.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged to provide regular updates on Nigeria’s engagements and outcomes during the AU sessions.
