The Nigerian’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, presented Nigeria’s position at a closed session of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the country formally endorsed proposed institutional reforms within the African Union (AU).
Nigeria threw its weight behind sweeping reforms focused on strengthening peace and security governance, reinforcing democratic institutions, and enhancing cooperation with international financial institutions as well as the private sector.
The country also aligned with restructuring proposals aimed at boosting domestic and regional resource mobilisation to ensure affordable development financing across the continent. Central to the reforms is the adoption of a continental framework on reducing inequality, anchored on credible data systems, expanded social protection, productive job creation, and inclusive industrial policies.
At the high-level meeting, African leaders deliberated on measures to reposition the AU to respond more effectively to emerging security threats, governance challenges, and economic pressures confronting member states.
The reforms are designed to streamline the AU’s institutional structure, improve coordination among its organs, and strengthen accountability in delivering on continental mandates.
Nigeria’s endorsement underscores its support for a more efficient and self-reliant AU capable of mobilising internal resources, reducing dependency on external funding, and fostering partnerships that can unlock sustainable economic growth across Africa.
