Nigeria, Brazil Moves for Stronger South-South Trade, Investment Ties

Brasília, Brazil – Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, has called for a deeper Nigeria-Brazil partnership that moves beyond traditional political and economic ties, stressing the immense opportunities for cooperation between the two nations.

Alckmin made the remarks while co-chairing a high-level bilateral ministerial meeting in Brasília alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on the sidelines of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s State Visit to Brazil.

Edun, speaking for Nigeria, emphasized the urgency of bolstering South-South cooperation amid a global funding squeeze and shifting trade dynamics. “There is a withdrawal from global funding; hence, there is a need for multilateral action. This is a time the Global South must trade more with each other,” he said, noting the need for stronger Nigeria-Brazil trade under a “new tariff regime.”

Highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, Edun said President Tinubu’s policies have restored investor confidence and stabilized macroeconomic indicators, citing steady foreign reserves and a stabilized exchange rate.

The bilateral session is part of the broader agenda of Tinubu’s State Visit, which aims to transform historic ties between the two countries into modern partnerships in agriculture, aviation, energy, trade, and cultural exchange.
