The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of two Nigerians in separate violent incidents in the United Kingdom and Canada in the early days of the new year.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the incidents as shocking and deeply troubling, noting that they underscore growing concerns about the safety of Nigerians living abroad.
Speaking through the Commission’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, Mr. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased, urging them to remain strong in the face of the painful loss.
In a statement signed by Mr. Balogun, mnipr, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NiDCOM, Abuja, the Commission commended the swift response of the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service, while calling for thorough, transparent and timely investigations to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“She assured that NiDCOM will continue to engage the relevant authorities and closely monitor the investigations to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.
Dabiri-Erewa also reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, assuring that the Commission will work closely with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada to provide necessary support to the affected families, in line with its mandate.

The victims were identified as John Temitope Onetufo, a 23-year-old Nigerian who was fatally stabbed on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of London, and Mr. Osemwengie Irorere, a 46-year-old Nigerian who was shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
NiDCOM called on Nigerians in the diaspora to remain vigilant and cooperate with local law enforcement agencies, while reiterating its resolve to continue advocating for the protection and dignity of Nigerians wherever they reside.
