The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has issued an urgent directive to all NEMA field offices covering communities along the River Niger to intensify advocacy and mobilization for flood preparedness following reports of rising water levels upstream in the Republic of Benin.
In her directive, Mrs. Umar instructed officials to sensitize residents, urging communities in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and advising those living on high-risk flood plains to begin immediate evacuation to safer, higher grounds.
She specifically identified Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states—bordering Benin Republic—as priority areas of concern.

The NEMA chief further appealed to the state governments in these high-risk zones to strengthen their State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), while activating contingency plans to reduce the impact of potential flooding this year.
Reaffirming NEMA’s commitment, Mrs. Umar emphasized that coordinated emergency actions remain crucial to safeguarding lives and livelihoods along the River Niger.
