The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Sokoto Operations Office, has responded to a devastating fire incident that occurred in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out at a school housing approximately 100 people, mostly children. Tragically, 17 lives were lost, while another 17 sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was triggered by stored sticks, locally known as kara, which had been gathered near the school premises.
NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, expressed her condolences to the victims and their families. She has directed the NEMA Sokoto Operations Office to work closely with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant stakeholders to provide immediate relief and assistance to those affected.
