The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has secured critical funding to boost Nigeria’s preparedness and response to the looming 2025 flood season, following a compelling presentation by its Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, to the National Economic Council (NEC) on Thursday.
At the meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Mrs. Umar presented a comprehensive update on flood threats nationwide, detailing NEMA’s preparedness strategy, real-time risk assessments, early warning systems, and coordination mechanisms for emergency response.
Her presentation underscored the urgent need for proactive financial and logistical measures, prompting the NEC to approve a significant intervention fund totalling ₦21.5 billion, to be distributed as follows:₦3 billion each to the 36 states and the FCT, ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Environment, ₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, and ₦10 billion to NEMA

Mrs. Umar commended the Vice President and Council members for the swift response, describing the approval as a “strategic and timely intervention” that would greatly enhance national flood resilience.
She assured that NEMA will ensure efficient, transparent, and accountable use of the funds and will continue working closely with state governments, ministries, agencies, and partners to deliver a coordinated, timely, and people-focused flood response across the country.
