The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has recently conducted comprehensive assessments of communities impacted by flooding in Anambra and Bayelsa States as part of its annual flood preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
The assessments were carried out in partnership with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In Anambra, NEMA’s evaluation focused on eight Local Government Areas (LGAs): Ogbaru, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayemelum, Awka North, Ihiala, Idemili South, and Ekwusigo. The goal was to determine the extent of damage, including the number of affected households, fatalities, missing persons, and the destruction of homes and farmlands. Chief Paul Odenigbo, Executive Secretary of Anambra SEMA, expressed his gratitude for NEMA’s swift response.
In Bayelsa, the assessment spanned 54 communities across seven LGAs: Sagbama, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia, Ekeremor, Yenagoa, and Brass. Communities visited included Asamabiri, Kaiama, Amasoma, Toron Ndoro, and Igbogene, among others. Dr. Dio Wenapere, a Director at Bayelsa SEMA, led the state team in collaboration with NEMA.
Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Director-General of NEMA, stressed the importance of aligning data with SEMAs and partners to accurately gauge the scale of the disaster, ensuring a coordinated and effective response.
She reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to proactive disaster management and pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to provide necessary support.
