The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has implemented health insurance schemes for vulnerable households and individuals in the Northeast region.
Revealing its intention to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with NPC to address concerns such as out-of-school children, girl child education, the Almajiris phenomenon, and opportunities for youth training and skills acquisition.
The Managing Director and CEO of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, emphasized that this initiative would significantly aid families in the region who have been impacted by the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.
During a meeting with the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), on Monday, Alkali expressed the Commission’s commitment to collaborating with NPC to address humanitarian challenges in the region, particularly concerning issues such as out-of-school children, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and victims of flood disasters.
In line with its mandate, the commission has formulated a comprehensive 10-year Master Plan to address various challenges including poverty, displacement caused by insurgents and flood disasters, youth unrest, inadequate infrastructure, and climate vulnerability.
Alhaji Alkali commended NPC for providing invaluable geo-spatial data that could facilitate the implementation of NEDC’s Master Plan.
Alkali highlighted the Commission’s utilization of consultants and researchers to execute its development programs in the region, assuring that NEDC would work closely with NPC to tackle critical humanitarian issues in the Northeast.
Alkali praised NPC’s willingness to collaborate in overcoming these challenges and enhancing the quality of life for individuals in the region.
In response, the Chairman Nasir Isah Kwarra of NPC expressed the importance of collaboration with NEDC in sharing demographic information and data essential for effective program delivery.
He emphasized the significance of NPC’s efforts in nationwide birth registration campaigns and population census preparation, offering vital support to NEDC in fulfilling its mandate.
Kwarra disclosed plans for a regional summit focusing on out-of-school children and the Almajiris issue, aiming to engage Northeast governors, Ulamas, and religious leaders in addressing these pressing challenges.
The collaborative approach between NEDC and NPC signifies a strategic partnership to address complex socio-economic and demographic issues in the Northeast region.
