Nigeria and Germany government have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with a renewed focus on multilateral cooperation, energy infrastructure, and reciprocal diplomatic support at the global stage.
This formed the crux of a high-level meeting between the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, in Abuja.
During the engagement, Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to sustained and open diplomatic dialogue with the Federal Republic of Germany, emphasizing that the Ministry remains ready to facilitate discussions on issues of mutual interest. He noted that Nigeria values constructive exchanges that strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Ambassador Günther, in her remarks, described the successful convening of the Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission in November 2025 as a major milestone that reinforced the strategic depth of relations between both countries. She expressed Germany’s appreciation for Nigeria’s continued partnership and principled diplomatic engagement.
A major highlight of the discussions was reciprocal support at multilateral forums, particularly regarding candidacies to the United Nations Security Council. The German envoy recalled the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing and commended Nigeria’s support for Germany’s candidature. She reiterated Berlin’s longstanding advocacy for multilateralism, global peace, and reforms within the United Nations system, including greater African representation in both permanent and non-permanent seats on the Security Council.
The German Ambassador affirmed that Germany’s position aligns with Nigeria’s longstanding call for equitable global governance and enhanced African participation in international decision-making processes.
Energy infrastructure modernization also featured prominently in the discussions. Ambassador Günther underscored Germany’s continued interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to upgrade its energy transmission and distribution systems, describing the sector as critical to Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda. She expressed optimism that pending administrative processes would soon be concluded to enable the rollout of key energy projects backed by German investment and technical expertise.
Responding, Ambassador Ahmed assured the German envoy that relevant departments within the Ministry would review outstanding documentation and provide necessary clarifications regarding reciprocal diplomatic arrangements. He acknowledged the importance of Germany’s partnership in Nigeria’s economic modernization drive, particularly in advancing energy reforms, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable investment frameworks.

Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening security cooperation. Germany signaled readiness to expand capacity-building initiatives and collaborative frameworks aimed at strengthening regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.
The meeting concluded with both countries reaffirming their shared dedication to multilateralism, economic cooperation, cultural diplomacy, and institutional coordination — underscoring the growing maturity and strategic depth of Nigeria–Germany relations anchored on mutual respect and shared global responsibilities.
