The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has appointed Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Ali as its new Secretary. His appointment follows the voluntary resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Rabi’u Kontagora, after which Alhaji Alidu Shutti briefly served in an acting capacity.

A press statement signed by Shafii Sani Mohammed, Principal Information Officer for the NAHCON Chairman/CEO, confirmed the appointment on Friday.

Dr. Ali was selected after successfully meeting the criteria outlined in the Commission’s public advertisement. His appointment was endorsed by NAHCON’s 5th Board during its meeting on February 26, 2025, in accordance with Section 8 of the NAHCON Establishment Act (2006). His selection ensures representation of the North East in the Commission’s leadership. His prior experience as Executive Secretary of the Borno State Pilgrims Board was a key advantage in his selection.

Born in Yerwa, Maiduguri, Borno State, Dr. Ali holds a Doctorate and Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Administration, a Diploma in Computer Application and Internet, and an Executive Life Manager Certificate, among other credentials.

He pursued his education at:

University of Maiduguri

Bayero University, Kano

University College for Islamic Call, Tripoli, Libya

Additionally, he attended Administrative Staff College, Lagos, Yaysib Computer Institute, and Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology, Maiduguri.

Dr. Ali brings decades of experience, having served in various leadership roles, including:

Director, Centre for Kanuri Ajami and Qur’anic Studies, Borno State University

Chairman, Caretaker Management Committee, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State

Deputy Provost, Muhammad Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Maiduguri

Responsibilities as NAHCON Secretary

As the new Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Ali will oversee:

Record-keeping and correspondence

Dr. Ali’s appointment is expected to bring significant value to NAHCON. His tenure begins upon assumption of office and will last four years, with the possibility of renewal.
