The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and substandard products valued at over N120 billion between October and December 2024.
This large-scale operation reflects the agency’s intensified enforcement efforts across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to protecting Nigerian consumers by ensuring that only safe and wholesome products are available in the market, particularly during the festive season.
Prof. Adeyeye issued a stern warning to those engaged in the production and distribution of substandard goods, emphasizing that violators would face stricter penalties in the coming year.
Key Seizures and Destructions
Ibadan, Oyo State: On December 11, NAFDAC destroyed expired and unregistered drugs worth N11 billion.
Lagos State: fake medicines worth N300 million were seized during a November raid at Tyre Village, Trade Fair Complex.
Counterfeit alcohol packaging materials valued at N2 billion were confiscated.
Abuja: Over 1,600 bags of counterfeit rice worth approximately N5 billion were confiscated at Wuse and Garki markets.
Prof. Adeyeye urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, particularly during the holiday season. She advised consumers to:
Purchase food and drinks only from reputable outlets with identifiable addresses.
Avoid medicines and packaged food products lacking NAFDAC registration numbers.

Be cautious of products sold at suspiciously low prices, as these are often compromised.
NAFDAC also called on the public to report any suspicious activities involving counterfeit goods.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate will continue its operations to remove substandard medicines and unwholesome food items from markets nationwide, ensuring the safety and health of Nigerian consumers.
