An Islamic advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has declared that political parties seeking support from Muslim voters in Nigeria’s South West must field Muslim candidates in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the group’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, said Muslims in the region would withhold their votes from any party that fails to present Muslim gubernatorial candidates in key states.
MURIC specifically called for the emergence of Muslim governors in Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, and Osun State, while insisting that political parties in Ekiti State and Ondo State should nominate Muslims as deputy governorship candidates.
The group described its position as a push for “inclusive governance,” alleging that Muslims in the South West have been politically marginalised since 2023.
According to the statement, MURIC accused current administrations in the region of disproportionately favouring Christians in political appointments, including commissioners and board positions, which it claimed has led to socio-economic disadvantages for Muslims.
The organisation further argued that access to employment opportunities, government interventions, and public resources is often influenced by representation in government, warning that continued imbalance could deepen grievances among Muslim communities.
MURIC also dismissed claims that political parties struggle to find qualified Muslim candidates, describing such arguments as “deceitful” and “unacceptable,” while insisting that competent Muslim professionals are available across the region.

The group maintained that its position is not an endorsement of any political party but a collective stance by South West Muslims aimed at influencing electoral outcomes through constitutional means.
“As 2027 approaches, any political party which fails to present a Muslim candidate should expect to lose Muslim votes,” the statement added.
