The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Abuja Chapter, has appealed to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and relevant government agencies to take urgent and decisive action to address the escalating waste management crisis in Abuja.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Ustaz Yunus Salahudeen, and Public Relations Officer, Lukman Laleye Babalola, on October 16, 2025, MURIC expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of cleanliness in the capital city, noting that Abuja—once admired for its orderliness and beauty—has become increasingly overwhelmed by waste accumulation.
“The worsening waste management situation poses grave risks to public health, the well-being of residents, and the aesthetic value of the city,” the statement read. “We urge the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and all relevant authorities to prioritize this issue without delay.”
MURIC called for an urgent overhaul of the waste management system, including the establishment of a reliable and frequent waste collection schedule, especially in densely populated areas such as the Central Area, Wuse, Garki, Maitama, Asokoro, and the five Area Councils.
The organization also recommended the provision and proper maintenance of waste disposal trucks, the introduction of night-time waste collection to prevent odour pollution and traffic congestion, and the deployment of motorised street-sweeping machines across the city.
In addition, MURIC emphasized the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices. The group noted that community participation and behavioral change are essential to building a culture of cleanliness in the FCT.

Furthermore, the organization called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and residents to develop and implement sustainable waste management solutions, stressing the need for accountability and regular monitoring.
“We call on the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to take urgent and comprehensive steps to tackle this growing challenge. Abuja must regain its status as a clean, healthy, and thriving capital,” MURIC stated.
