Fresh explosions in Maiduguri have claimed at least 23 lives and left more than 100 people injured, prompting strong reactions from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which described the incident as “worrisome” and a sign of growing insecurity.
The coordinated blasts occurred on Monday at multiple locations across the Borno State capital, including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and two busy markets—Post Office Market and Monday Market—raising fresh concerns over public safety in the North-East.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, MURIC’s Executive Director called on Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Gwabin Musa, to fulfil his pledge to safeguard the nation, warning that the scale and coordination of the attacks suggest serious lapses in security.
Describing the situation as alarming, the group said the fluctuating performance of security agencies in Borno reflects a troubling pattern of progress and regression.
“Nigerians are dying in large numbers,” the statement read, adding that the organisation is particularly concerned about the impact of the violence on communities in the North-East and North-West regions.
MURIC further alleged that the timing of the attacks may have been intended to embarrass President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the incident coincided with his official visit to the United Kingdom.
The group criticised the Defence Ministry’s response to rising insecurity, stating that “life has become very cheap” and urging the minister to match his earlier commitment to protect Nigerians “no matter what it takes.”
It also warned of escalating violence, including mass kidnappings and increasing fatalities, stressing that citizens deserve to live and work without fear.

“The clock is ticking. Nigerians deserve to sleep with two eyes closed. The Defence Minister must walk his talk. Enough is enough,” the statement added.
Security agencies have yet to issue a detailed official response on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
