The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 151 people have died and 3,018 individuals have been displaced following devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State. The disaster has also affected 503 households and damaged 264 houses.
In a situation report released Sunday, NEMA stated that it is working in coordination with other emergency response agencies to locate missing persons and deliver essential relief to victims.
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, NEMA’s rapid response and recovery team carried out a symbolic distribution of relief materials to affected residents. The items were subsequently handed over to the Local Government Authority, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and community leaders—including the Sarkin Hausawa—for continued distribution.
NEMA also reported that victims who were hospitalized have now been treated and discharged. However, the destruction of two township roads and bridges has severely disrupted transportation and economic activities in the area.
To prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, NEMA has deployed mobile water purification units to provide clean drinking water and promote hygiene practices in the affected communities.

Acting on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, the agency emphasized that “all hands are on deck” to ensure Mokwa receives the necessary support as the situation gradually stabilizes.
Meanwhile, NEMA has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), a multi-stakeholder coordination platform designed to monitor flood incidents, gather data, and manage emergency responses nationwide. The centre, now operational, began its work with the response to the Mokwa disaster and will continue to support flood-affected communities across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
