APC 8th Convention: Abbas Advocate for Tinubu’s Continuity Beyond 2027, Warns Against Legislative Turnover

By Fatima Saka

Abuja, FCT — The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for the continuation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration beyond 2027, arguing that ongoing economic reforms must be sustained to achieve lasting national progress.

Addressing delegates at the All Progressives Congress National Convention 2026, Abbas emphasised that the current administration made a deliberate choice to pursue difficult but necessary reforms rather than maintain what he described as an unsustainable economic system.

He acknowledged public concerns over rising costs and economic adjustments but insisted that the reforms were unavoidable. According to him, continuing previous policies would have deepened fiscal strain and shifted burdens to future generations.

The Speaker highlighted early gains from the reform agenda, including improved revenues to states, increased transparency, infrastructure development, and enhanced security coordination, describing them as indicators of a “reset foundation” for national growth.

A major focus of his address was the need for political continuity, both in the executive and legislative arms of government. Abbas warned that frequent turnover in the National Assembly has weakened institutional memory and disrupted governance.

He urged party leaders and stakeholders to support the return of experienced and performing lawmakers, stressing that stability in the legislature is essential to sustain reforms and ensure policy consistency.

“The legislature is a partner in this journey,” he said, noting that repeated cycles of retraining new lawmakers come at a cost to governance and public resources.

Reaffirming support for the ruling party’s direction, Abbas also pledged that the North-West geopolitical zone would mobilise strong electoral backing for the APC, promising unity and coordinated political action ahead of future elections.

The Speaker further urged party members to remain disciplined and committed, framing the current period as a defining moment for both the APC and Nigeria’s long-term development trajectory.
