In a significant move toward promoting sustainability in Nigeria’s mining sector, Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD), has called on industry leaders to prioritize environmental responsibility, community engagement, and climate-friendly practices.
Speaking recently, at a sensitization program organized by the Ministry’s Mining Environmental Compliance (MEC) Department, Dr. Ogbe, represented by Mr. Yunusa Mohammed, Director of Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining, highlighted key strategies aimed at fostering a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Addressing mineral title holders, host communities, and stakeholders, Dr. Ogbe underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to developing a mining sector that aligns with global and national environmental standards. She reminded attendees that the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, mandates stringent environmental protocols throughout the mining process. “Responsible mining is not optional; it is essential,”
She said. “Our vision is a mining industry that propels economic growth while safeguarding the environment and empowering communities.”
Dr. Ogbe outlined the Ministry’s main areas of focus for steering the mining sector toward sustainability. These include promoting the use of renewable energy and advanced sustainable technologies to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint.
The Ministry, she said, is enforcing strict environmental compliance, supported by the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund (EPRF) to ensure accountability and land restoration.
She also highlighted the importance of strengthening community engagement through the Community Development Agreement (CDA), which requires mining companies to contribute to the welfare of host communities.
Dr. Ogbe emphasized the Ministry’s investment in research and innovation to develop climate-resilient technologies in line with Nigeria’s environmental goals.
She noted that the annual sensitization program serves as a forum for stakeholders to discuss these priorities, share best practices, and collaborate on solutions that will make Nigeria’s mining sector a global model for responsible resource management. She encouraged active participation and alignment with the Ministry’s vision for a sustainable, resilient industry.
Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mines Environmental Compliance (MEC) Department, elaborated on the purpose of the one-day program, stressing the importance of compliance with environmental regulations by mineral title holders.
The initiative, she said, also highlighted the need to protect the rights of host communities and ensure mining practices are both environmentally and socially responsible, in line with national and international standards.
During the event, goodwill messages from stakeholders expressed strong support for the Ministry’s mission of driving macroeconomic growth through sustainable mining, aligned with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Attendees commended the Ministry’s leadership and dedication, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s mining sector and bolstering its contribution to national development.
These messages reaffirmed unwavering support for the Ministry’s efforts and commitment to creating a thriving, sustainable mining industry that benefits both the environment and the nation.
