Lakwaya Attack: Senator Barau Applauds Swift Security Response, Demands End to Banditry in Kano

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has commended security operatives for their swift response that led to the rescue of three of the five persons abducted by bandits in Zurin Mahauta village, Lakwaya town, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.

The attack occurred on Sunday night when suspected bandits, believed to have crossed into Kano from neighbouring states, invaded the community and kidnapped five residents.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau praised the gallantry of the security personnel and urged them to intensify efforts to rescue the remaining two victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

“Last night’s invasion of Zurin Mahauta village in Lakwaya town, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, by marauding bandits is condemnable, and these criminals must be dealt with decisively. The good news, however, is that security operatives have rescued three out of the five persons kidnapped. I urge our gallant officers to pursue the criminals and rescue the remaining two victims,” he said.

Confirming the development, an online report by Daily Trust on Monday quoted Captain Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, as saying that “three persons have so far been rescued.”

Senator Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, stressed that bandit incursions into Kano communities must be halted.

“This unfortunate incursion must be the last in the series of attacks on our peace-loving people. For weeks, our area has enjoyed relative peace until this incident,” he said.

“The security of our people’s lives and property is paramount. I will continue to support our security agencies with logistics to enhance their operational effectiveness,” Senator Barau added.
