Lagos Police Launch ‘Humanitarian Policing’, Bring Cheer to Orphanages, Seek to Rebuild Public Trust
The Area H Command of the Lagos State Police on Saturday extended cheer, hope, and compassion to children in selected orphanages, as officers donated food and essential household items as part of a community outreach initiative.
Led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area H Command, Ogudu, ACP Sholla Omilade, the outreach formed part of the Command’s Humanitarian Policing Initiative, inspired by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, to strengthen police–community relations through service and empathy.
Speaking during the visit, ACP Omilade said the gesture was targeted at reaching the less privileged, especially children in orphanages, during the festive season to demonstrate love and care beyond the conventional responsibilities of law enforcement.
She explained that the food items and other materials were personal contributions from officers of Area H Command, Divisional Police Officers, personnel, and friends of the police, with additional support from anonymous donors and key community stakeholders.
“This is our way of showing that the police are not just law enforcers but friends of the people. We are not only saying it; we are demonstrating it by giving back to society,” she said.
Omilade noted that the initiative was a deliberate strategy to rebuild public trust and address negative perceptions about the Nigeria Police Force, reaffirming the commitment of the police to the welfare and safety of all citizens, particularly the vulnerable.
“Many people see the police as enemies, but we are not. This outreach is to show that we truly care, not just by words but through action,” she added.
The ACP also offered prayers for the children, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, and the nation, wishing all Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Representatives of Heritage Home in Anthony Village and Echo of Mercy and Hope Foundation in Maryland expressed appreciation to the police, describing the gesture as a morale booster and a positive step toward enhancing public confidence. They said sustained acts of kindness would significantly improve the image of the police and positively impact vulnerable groups in society.
