The Lagos State Government on Tuesday launched a large-scale distribution of textbooks to public primary and secondary schools, marking a major step toward improving access to learning materials and raising the quality of education across the state.
The exercise was officially flagged off at the Lagos State Resource Centre, Ojodu-Berger.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, said the initiative reflects the state’s firm commitment to strengthening teaching and learning. He stressed that education is incomplete without access to essential textbooks, which play a critical role in equipping students for academic success, boosting comprehension, and creating a conducive learning environment.
Alli-Balogun applauded teachers for their dedication and for the impressive performance of Lagos students in recent national examinations. He noted that their hard work has continued to position Lagos as a leader in educational achievement.
“They really tried and are still trying their best. In the last exam, they excelled due to their energy, commitment, and hard work, though more efforts are needed to sustain excellence,” he said.
Addressing students, the commissioner urged them to uphold discipline, curiosity, and consistent effort. He described the current phase as a turning point for academic growth in Lagos public schools. He encouraged them to study independently, seek clarity from teachers when needed, and maintain respectful engagement to ensure effective learning.
He also praised his team, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, for their dedication to implementing education policies and driving the THEMES Plus agenda — which prioritises education, technology integration, and modern teaching practices.
Alli-Balogun disclosed that the first batch of textbooks is focused on Senior Secondary 3 students, covering Mathematics, English, and other core subjects. He added that more textbooks would be procured next year to expand the distribution across all classes.

The commissioner further revealed that digital tablets would soon be provided to SS3 students to promote independent learning and support improved performance, in line with the state’s education and technology goals.
He urged teachers and school principals to ensure that the newly distributed books are properly used and safeguarded as the state continues to invest in a stronger, technology-driven education system.
