Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will step down once a replacement is chosen. Speaking to the media in Ottawa on Monday, Trudeau emphasized his determination to stay in office, describing himself as a “fighter” and indicating that he plans to hold on until his party stabilizes and recovers from potential setbacks.
The Prime Minister also announced the suspension of Parliament until March 24, 2025. At that time, a confidence vote will determine the future of the Liberal Party’s leadership.
Trudeau criticized Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, dismissing his approach as unsuitable for Canada. “Pierre Poilievre’s vision for this country is not the right one for Canadians. Stopping the fight against climate change doesn’t make sense,” Trudeau said. “We need an ambitious, optimistic view of the future, and Pierre Poilievre is not offering that.”
Opposition lawmakers had been preparing to challenge Trudeau’s leadership when Parliament was originally scheduled to reopen on January 27.
