The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, has expressed profound shock and sorrow over the death of seven journalists who lost their lives in a lone road accident in Gombe State on Monday evening.
The fatal crash occurred in Gombe South as the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony in the Gombe South Senatorial District. They had reportedly travelled to celebrate with a colleague from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) who got married earlier in the day.
Confirming the incident, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, described the crash as “fatal,” noting that preliminary investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause.
In his condolence message, the Minister described the tragedy as a devastating blow to Nigeria’s media fraternity and the nation at large. He lauded the professionalism and commitment of the deceased journalists, acknowledging their invaluable role in informing and educating the public.
“This is a harrowing moment. Nigeria has lost dedicated voices who informed, educated, and stood for truth. Their passing is a heavy blow to us all,” Idris said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Gombe State Council, and especially the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased. He prayed for divine comfort for the bereaved families and eternal rest for the departed souls.
“We stand in solidarity with the NUJ and the entire media community at this difficult time. We must continue to work together to improve safety measures for those who serve the nation daily,” he added.

The Minister assured that the Federal Government stands firmly with the media community and the grieving families, praying for strength and healing as they endure this painful loss.
