Former military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has publicly acknowledged that Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the launch of his book, A Journey in Service, which was reviewed by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Babangida confirmed that Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, met all electoral requirements.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida stated.
He, however, described the annulment of the election as one of the most difficult decisions of his life.
Babangida also expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honored Abiola by awarding him the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Nigeria’s highest national honor reserved for Presidents.
