The Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its pioneer members, Mr Matthew Ukachunwa, describing his passing as a major loss to journalism and health reporting in Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement jointly signed by HEWAN President and Secretary, Vivian Ihechu and Temitope Obayendo, respectively..
Ukachunwa, a journalist with New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd., reportedly died in the early hours of Feb. 16, leaving colleagues and members of the media community in mourning.
HEWAN described the late journalist as a consummate professional whose dedication and discipline inspired colleagues, particularly younger reporters.
According to the association, Ukachunwa was known for his calm disposition, strong professional ethics and meticulous approach to assignments.
HEWAN President, Ihechu, said the late journalist was renowned for punctuality and unwavering commitment to professional standards.
“Matthew Ukachunwa was the definition of a stickler for time. His commitment to punctuality and professional ethics was legendary.
” He knew his work and delivered with quiet excellence.
“He supported the association with his presence and constructive counsel and was never absent from our engagements. He was always prompt,” Ihechu said.

The association noted that Ukachunwa’s death came shortly after his participation in a capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Health Management Agency for health journalists on Feb. 13, where he received an ‘Early Bird’ award for arriving ahead of other participants.
HEWAN extended condolences to the family of the deceased, management of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd., and the entire journalism community, praying for strength for his loved ones during the period of mourning.
