The Golden-20 Association of Awgbu, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has taken bold steps to support education and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in the community.
The group recently donated two blocks of eight-room lodges to accommodate corps members teaching at Community Secondary School and Community High School, Awgbu. Each block, consisting of four rooms, was built to provide corps members with decent housing and improve their working conditions.
At Awgbu Grammar School, the association also drilled a borehole, constructed modern toilet facilities, and renovated a five-classroom block, enhancing the learning environment for students and teachers alike.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, President of the association, Chief Oliver Okoli, announced the award of 10 university scholarships for the 2024 academic year, each valued between ₦800,000 and ₦1 million.
He further celebrated 10 students who successfully graduated under the association’s 2019 scholarship scheme, describing their achievements as a testament to the group’s long-term investment in human capital.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, commended the association’s efforts, highlighting the importance of supporting corps members who help bridge the critical teacher shortage in public schools. She revealed that the state government had recently recruited 8,115 teachers and upgraded 21 schools to smart school status, with plans to establish a smart school in Awgbu.
Chairman of Orumba North LGA, Capt. Casmir Nwafor (rtd.), announced plans to construct additional lodges for corps members, while calling on community leaders to prioritise the security of serving youths.
NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, applauded the association’s contributions, assuring that the facilities would be put to effective use. She noted that with improved lodging facilities, more corps members could now be deployed to the area.
In her remarks, Rev. Sr. Mary Nwafor, Principal of Community Secondary School, appealed for the inclusion of her school in the smart school programme.

Expressing gratitude, corps member Mrs. Eucharia Nwobere and scholarship recipient Ms. Chisom Igbo pledged to make the most of the opportunity and contribute meaningfully to their community.
The event culminated in the formal presentation of scholarship cheques to the beneficiaries.
