The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the resignation of its Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in a chat with diplomatic correspondents in Abuja on Monday, stating that Tuggar formally submitted his resignation letter to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Ebienfa, the resignation complies with a presidential directive mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026. The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, and heads of federal agencies.
The policy aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, specifically Section 88(1), aimed at preventing conflicts of interest in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Tuggar, 59, is a seasoned diplomat and organisational analyst who previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany. He has held various roles across both the public and private sectors, bringing extensive experience to his political ambitions in Bauchi State.
His resignation marks a significant development in the political landscape as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
