The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has dismissed allegations circulating on social media over the death of a patient, Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, insisting that she received prompt and appropriate medical care, including the administration of anti-snake venom.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, the hospital clarified that Ms. Nwagene died from severe neurotoxic complications following a snake bite sustained on January 31, 2026, despite intensive medical intervention.
According to the statement, the management and medical team at FMC Abuja acted immediately upon the patient’s arrival, providing emergency resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and administering a polyvalent snake antivenom. The hospital stressed that claims suggesting the non-availability of antivenom or delays in response were “unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation.”
Dr. Muftau explained that after a rapid but thorough assessment, it became evident that the patient had already developed severe neurotoxic effects from the snake bite. Plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for advanced care; however, her condition deteriorated suddenly just before the transfer.
“Our team of professionals immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving measures, but sadly, all efforts to revive her proved unsuccessful,” the statement said.
The FMC management expressed deep condolences to the Nwagene family, acknowledging the pain of losing a loved one, while reaffirming confidence in the professionalism and dedication of its healthcare workers.
