Abuja, Nigeria – August 23, 2025: The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEWS Center), has issued an urgent flood alert, warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in several states between August 23 and 24, 2025.
In a statement signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the Ministry listed Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe States as high-risk areas. Specific locations include Makurdi, Otukpo, Maiduguri, Gombe, Jega, Keffi, Lapai, Potiskum, and other surrounding communities.
The government also ordered residents living along the River Niger floodplain from Jebba to Lokoja to evacuate immediately, citing rising water levels that pose a severe threat to lives and property.

“Relevant stakeholders should take urgent measures to safeguard communities at risk. Feedback from state government representatives and disaster response agencies is highly encouraged,” the statement read.
This alert follows a similar prediction issued on August 20, 2025, as Nigeria braces for intensified rainfall and flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
