The Federal Government is reassessing the planned ban on sachet alcoholic beverages and 200ml PET bottle spirits, originally slated for December 2025. This follows a formal request from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for clarification from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
In a letter dated 1st December 2025, addressed to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, the Permanent Secretary (General Services), M.S. Danjuma, highlighted concerns raised by the House Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control. The committee, in its correspondence (Ref. No. NASS/10/HR/CT.53/77, dated 13th November 2025), noted that resolutions previously passed by the House of Representatives regarding the ban have not been fully implemented.

The issue traces back to 14th March 2024, when the House of Representatives considered the committee’s investigative report on NAFDAC’s decision to prohibit the sale and distribution of sachet alcohol and small-volume PET spirits. The report recommended suspending the ban, citing stakeholder concerns and the need for further review.
Despite the parliamentary resolution, the House maintains that NAFDAC has continued preparations to enforce the ban. In response, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, urged the Ministry to ensure full adherence to the 2024 resolution.
While awaiting the Ministry’s guidance, the SGF stressed that the government seeks a well-informed position before deciding whether to proceed with or suspend the December 2025 ban.
