The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Cuba bilateral relations and advancing multilateral cooperation in addressing global peace, security and development challenges.
This position was restated on Tuesday in Abuja when the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Nigeria, Her Excellency Ambassador (Mrs) Miriam Morales Palmero, at the Ministry’s headquarters.
The meeting provided a platform for both countries to review the state of their longstanding bilateral relations, exchange views on pressing international developments, and reaffirm their shared commitment to peace, multilateralism and the principles of international law.
Ambassador Morales Palmero expressed appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria for its consistent support and solidarity, noting that Nigeria’s stance reflects the cordial, principled and historic relationship between both nations, particularly within multilateral fora.
She briefed the Permanent Secretary on recent developments in Latin America and their wider regional implications, calling for deeper international understanding and cooperation. The Cuban envoy underscored Cuba’s commitment to peaceful engagement, social development, free education, universal healthcare and gender inclusion, while reaffirming her country’s openness to dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.
The Cuban Ambassador also informed the Permanent Secretary of plans for a proposed high-level visit to Nigeria by the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, following the African Union Summit. According to her, the visit would build on previous high-level engagements and further strengthen political, economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
In his response, Ambassador Ahmed welcomed the Cuban Ambassador and reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to continue deepening its relationship with Cuba. He emphasised Nigeria’s firm commitment to peace, security and the peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law.
The Permanent Secretary assured Cuba of Nigeria’s continued solidarity and willingness to engage constructively within multilateral frameworks to address shared global challenges.
He further highlighted Nigeria’s active role in multilateral diplomacy, including its engagements within the United Nations system and other international platforms, stressing the importance of cooperation among developing countries in tackling global security, development and human rights concerns.
Both parties ended the meeting by reaffirming their mutual commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Cuba relations for the benefit of their peoples and sustaining collaboration on regional and global issues of common interest.
