In a bid to equip Nigerian youths with essential technical skills for employment and entrepreneurship, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Steel Development, has launched a three-phase Boot Camp Training Programme on welding. The initiative aims to provide hands-on training in welding techniques, fostering industrial growth and strengthening Nigeria’s steel and metallurgical sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of the first batch of trainees on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Onitsha, Anambra State, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, described the program as a critical step toward building a skilled workforce. He emphasized that under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, Prince Shaiubu Abubakar Audu, the Ministry is committed to repositioning the steel and metals industry as a pillar of Nigeria’s economic transformation.
“Developing this sector requires more than just infrastructure—it demands the empowerment of human capital. This boot camp is a strategic move to equip young Nigerians with practical skills that will enhance their employability and drive industrial innovation,” Dr. Isokpunwu stated.
He further explained that participants will undergo rigorous training in three key areas:
1. Welding and Fabrication
2. Industrial Foundry and Metallurgy
3. Instrumentation, System Control, and Mechanical Maintenance
The program is designed to bridge skill gaps, boost innovation, and enhance job opportunities within the steel sector. Dr. Isokpunwu also highlighted the Ministry’s provision of accommodation, feeding, and starter packs for all trainees. However, he issued a stern warning against misconduct, including indiscipline, safety violations, and prohibited activities such as drug use or possession of weapons, which would lead to immediate disqualification.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Steel, Senator Patrick Ndubueze, lauded the initiative, describing it as a milestone in empowering Nigerian youths. Represented by Hon. Greg Owurmanam, the senator commended the Ministry and its partners for their dedication to skill development and urged participants to seize the opportunity for personal and professional growth.
In his presentation, Engr. Frederick E. Ewa, Director of Metallurgical Inspectorate, outlined the significance of the Boot Camp, noting that it is tailored to address the manpower shortage in Nigeria’s steel industry. He stressed that trainees will engage in real-world practical sessions, industry best practices, and safety protocols essential for high-quality output in the sector.
Encouraging full participation, Engr. Ewa cautioned that any form of misconduct would not be tolerated.
MTI Onitsha: A Hub for Technical Excellence
Welcoming participants, Engr. Dr. F.U. Obi, Acting Chief Executive of the Metallurgical Training Institute (MTI), Onitsha, described the program as a bold step toward developing the next generation of skilled professionals and entrepreneurs. He highlighted MTI’s long-standing role in technical and vocational education, noting that its graduates have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s steel industry.

The launch of the welding Boot Camp reflects the Federal Government’s broader strategy to revitalize the metallurgical sector, foster self-reliance among youths, and accelerate national industrialization. As the program progresses, it is expected to create a ripple effect, boosting productivity and innovation in Nigeria’s steel industry.
