The Federal Government has unveiled a national programme aimed at strengthening climate resilience and environmental consciousness among young Nigerians through the launch of the Environment Club and Environment Society.
The initiative, launched in Abuja by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was described by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, as a major step toward embedding sustainability principles across Nigeria’s educational system. According to a recent statement signed by Ibrahim Haruna, Director of Information and Public Relations, the Minister said the programme will equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to champion climate action and advance circular economy solutions.
“The initiative will nurture environmentally conscious citizens from primary schools to tertiary institutions and even NYSC members,” Lawal said, adding that it will offer hands-on experience in tree planting, recycling, eco-business development, and climate awareness campaigns—creating a pathway from knowledge to economic empowerment.
He called on State Governments, Local Government Chairmen, teachers, students, and youth groups nationwide to support the scheme, assuring that the Ministry of Environment will provide full technical and institutional backing for its success.
While launching the Environment Club and Environment Society at the Presidential Villa, Senator Tinubu stated that the partnership between the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and the Federal Ministry of Environment aims to raise a generation of environmentally conscious and empowered youth capable of tackling climate change, waste management challenges, pollution, and biodiversity loss. She added that the nationwide rollout will also reawaken community participation in environmental sanitation and public hygiene.
In her vote of thanks, the Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Engr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar (Mrs), commended the First Lady for her commitment to youth empowerment and environmental stewardship. She also lauded the Minister of Environment, development partners, educators, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the programme, noting that their collaboration “strengthens our national efforts towards environmental sustainability.”

“Please don’t be part of the pollution but be part of the solution,” she urged.
The launch marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s environmental agenda, positioning the nation’s youth at the forefront of building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
