FG Initiates Ramsar Designation Process for Ogoni Wetland, Advancing UNEP Cleanup Agenda
The Federal Government, through the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), has commenced the process of designating the Ogoni Wetland as a Ramsar Site, marking a major step in the implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Report on the Ogoni environment.
Labaran Ahmed, National Focal Point for the Ramsar Convention and Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Environment, who is leading the ongoing field sampling, said the initiative will conserve biodiversity, enhance local livelihoods, boost ecotourism, and further secure global recognition for the Ogoni Wetlands.
According to the UNEP Report, Ramsar status will provide Nigeria with a clear roadmap for the restoration and sustainable management of the Ogoni wetland ecosystem.

Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey—represented by the Director of Technical Services, Professor Damien-Paul Aguiyi—said the move reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to fully implementing the UNEP recommendations.
Nigeria is also a signatory to the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, which outlines global standards for research on marine genetic resources, transparency, and equitable benefit-sharing.
