
Nigeria Government dedication to achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2030 has received a significant boost with the recent announcement of eight more Local Government Areas (LGAs) as ODF in the States of Kano and Kebbi.
According to a press statement signed on Thursday by Funmi Imuetinyan, Director Information and Public Relations.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, FNICE, disclosed that the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) has officially recognized these eight LGAs as ODF, marking a crucial advancement in Nigeria’s pursuit of the national ODF objective.
Prof. Utsev expressed that the NTGS, a collaborative platform involving key stakeholders from relevant Ministries, Government Agencies, Development Partners, NGOs, and the Media, ratified and declared the ODF status of the eight LGAs during its monthly assembly in Abuja on September 18, 2024.
The newly designated ODF LGAs are:
Kano State
– Kiru
– Bagwai
– Dawakin Tofa
– Gaya
– Shanono
– Gabasawa
– Ungogo
Kebbi State
– Shanga
With these additions, the Honourable Minister highlighted that the total count of ODF LGAs in the nation has now reached 134.
This achievement underscores the continuous endeavors to improve public health, sanitation, and environmental sustainability throughout Nigeria.
