The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has officially taken over the management of Marhai Forest Reserve in Wamba Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, elevating it to the status of a National Park. This milestone was marked by a colorful ceremony held recently at the Government House, Lafia.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, who officiated the event, expressed gratitude to the government and people of Nasarawa State for their cooperation.
He described the takeover as a significant step in advancing the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to diversify Nigeria’s revenue sources by focusing on biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in addition to crude oil.
The Minister highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, calling it a demonstration of cooperative federalism.
He emphasized that the partnership between the federal and state governments ensures a sustainable future for coming generations.
Reflecting on the journey to this achievement, Balarabe noted that the process of upgrading Marhai Forest Reserve to a National Park began in 2011 and was realized despite challenges in management.
He reassured stakeholders that the Ministry, in collaboration with local and international partners, is committed to addressing these challenges and maximizing the park’s potential.
Acknowledging the contributions of Nasarawa State’s Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, and the people of the state, the Minister described the handover of the forest reserve as a testament to the state’s commitment to national conservation efforts that transcend political boundaries.
He called on the host community to support the National Park Service (NPS) and the Ministry in transforming Marhai into a world-class National Park.

He described Marhai Forest Reserve as a jewel of Nasarawa’s biodiversity, with its unique ecosystem, diverse wildlife, and scenic landscapes serving as a source of pride for both the state and the nation.
The Governor urged the NPS to enhance the park’s ecological integrity while promoting eco-tourism and community development.

He stressed the importance of inclusive community engagement to ensure the partnership’s benefits reach all stakeholders, making the park a global model for conservation excellence and environmental stability.
Also speaking at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Muhammad Ubandoma Aliyu, and the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Yakubu Kwanta, pledged their support for the sustainable management of the park. They highlighted its potential for eco-tourism, research, education, and the sustainable utilization of its resources.
The officials also noted that this initiative aligns with similar efforts to establish National Parks in Osun, Jigawa, and Bayelsa States, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to conserving Nigeria’s rich biodiversity.
The transformation of Marhai Forest Reserve into a National Park signals a significant stride toward sustainable environmental stewardship and national conservation efforts, ensuring the preservation of Nigeria’s natural resources for generations to come.
