Fence Collapses in Maiduguri: Five Children Die, One Injured

An injured child is currently receiving medical attention while investigations have been launched into the circumstances surrounding a tragic fence collapse that claimed the lives of five children in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, when a fence reportedly collapsed on six children in the neighbourhood. Five of the victims died on the spot, while one child sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, said the command received a distress report through the Divisional Police Officer of the Bulumkutu Division.

According to Daso, the deceased children were all under the age of 16. He added that police operatives promptly responded to the scene and commenced preliminary investigations to ascertain the cause of the fence collapse.

“The injured child is presently receiving treatment at a medical facility, while investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the incident,” the police spokesperson said.

The tragic event has thrown the Bulumkutu community into mourning, with residents calling on authorities to ensure proper safety checks on structures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
