The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has pledged the Ministry’s full support and collaboration for the growth of Nigeria’s Environmental Management and Disaster Risk Reduction Institute (EMDRRI), situated in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Minister made this known while receiving a delegation led by EMDRRI President/CEO, Mr. Stephen Ogboli, in his office.
Commending the institute for advancing environmental management in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the sector, Balarabe urged EMDRRI to prioritize a practical, skills-based curriculum. He emphasized that graduates of the institute should be equipped to become employers of labour rather than job seekers.
Reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to a sustainable and resilient environment, the Minister highlighted ongoing efforts such as nationwide public awareness campaigns on flood management, the implementation of the National Circular Economy Roadmap, and initiatives to reduce waste, encourage recycling, and drive innovation for green economic growth.
“We are open to robust partnerships with institutions like EMDRRI to scale up efforts in environmental protection, climate adaptation, and disaster risk management,” the Minister assured.
In his remarks, Mr. Ogboli applauded the Ministry for its proactive leadership in tackling environmental challenges and expressed optimism for stronger collaboration.

He noted that EMDRRI’s expertise in disaster risk reduction and ecosystem preservation positioned it as a strategic partner in addressing climate change, pollution, and other pressing threats.
As part of the visit, EMDRRI conferred on the Minister the distinguished title of Fellow of the Institute in recognition of his contributions to environmental sustainability.
