The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in Abuja.
The arrest took place on Tuesday at 12:54 PM, according to EFCC officials, dispelling earlier reports that Bello had voluntarily surrendered. The agency’s Chief Security Officer apprehended the former governor, who is now in custody undergoing interrogation at the EFCC headquarters.
Refuting claims of voluntary surrender, an EFCC source stated: “Former Governor Yahaya Bello was arrested by the Chief Security Officer of the EFCC in Abuja. Contrary to some media reports, he did not present himself voluntarily.”
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest but withheld further details. This development represents a significant turn in the EFCC’s case against Bello, who has been accused of embezzling N101.4 billion in public funds and laundering N80.2 billion with his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu. Bello is facing a 16-count charge related to these allegations.
In October 2024, Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court issued a summons ordering Bello to appear for arraignment. Despite the directive and subsequent rulings by the Court of Appeal, Bello has failed to comply.
The EFCC has repeatedly sought adjournments to allow Bello more time to respond to the charges. His arraignment is now scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024, as the high-profile case continues to attract significant public interest.
