Demographic: India, China, Nigeria are significant contributors to global emissions – Study reveals

Amidst the anticipation of the upcoming Conference of the Parties, specifically (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, an annual convention organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a Study has unveiled that populous nations such as India, China, and Nigeria play a substantial role in global emissions.

The Study also highlighted that the global focus has primarily been on the climate crisis and has predominantly centered on high-income nations whose per Capital emissions and consumption patterns disproportionately impact global GHG emissions, taking into account the population dynamics.

The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) disclosed that research on the potential integration of family planning into climate strategies as a means to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The recent research on the intersection of population growth and climate action, published in the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research of the Vienna Institute of Demography and Austrian Academy of Sciences,

Professor Nyovani Madise, the Director of Development Policy and Head of AFIDEP Malawi, leading the research, emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive examination of the role of population growth, particularly in rapidly expanding countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which are projected to experience significant population growth by 2050.

In this context, the AFIDEP study advocated for a broader perspective, asserting: There is indisputable evidence that populous nations such as India, China, and Nigeria significantly contribute to global emissions.

Professor Nyovani remarked that the evidence regarding the impact of population growth on climate change is inconclusive. While the current framework, which prioritizes mitigation by high-income nations and adaptation by low-income, low-emitting countries, may be sensible in the short term, it is inadequate in addressing the future ramifications of rapid population growth.

Economic Development and GHG Emissions

The study challenges the prevailing notion that population growth is a secondary factor in climate change, overshadowed by industrial consumption patterns in wealthier nations. As highlighted in Professor Nyovani’s research, rapidly growing, low-income countries are likely to follow unsustainable development trajectories akin to those taken by Western countries, resulting in extensive land use changes, heightened energy demands, and increased GHG emissions as these nations industrialize.

These countries are not static in terms of their economic progress. The study notes that rapid urbanization and land-use modifications to meet food and housing requirements, coupled with escalating energy needs, will inevitably exert greater environmental pressures.

The research scrutinizes the predominant narrative advocated by climate justice movements, which accentuates the responsibility of high-income nations to bear the financial burden of global climate action.

While such arguments hold merit, Professor Nyovani and her team argue that they overlook the crucial role of population dynamics, particularly in rapidly growing yet impoverished African nations perceived primarily as victims of climate-induced calamities.

A Call For Forward-looking Investments

The AFIDEP research calls for developmental aid to prioritize curbing population growth in a voluntary and ethical manner, assisting couples in achieving their desired family size while concurrently addressing education, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability.

The study underscores the significance of empowering younger populations—who typically exhibit lower per capita GHG emissions and are more inclined to adopt sustainable consumption patterns—in shaping a climate-conscious future.

Age structure is pivotal. While older populations tend to exhibit higher per capita energy consumption and are less inclined to alter their behaviors, younger populations present an opportunity for a more sustainable trajectory. The researchers argue that climate-conscious policies can shape their fertility intentions, fostering a generation more attuned to the environmental challenges ahead.

A Controversial Debate Ahead Of COP29

The release of the research just before COP29 is likely to provoke debate. Discussions on population control within the context of climate action have historically been contentious. Previous endeavors, including policies advocating for population engineering and fertility reductions, were abandoned due to ethical considerations and unintended repercussions.

Nonetheless, the AFIDEP study rekindles the argument that addressing population growth—through voluntary, rights-based family planning initiatives—could be a pivotal element in reducing future emissions, especially in nations on the cusp of significant economic advancement.

Reducing childbearing arguably represents a simpler and more effective strategy for lowering emissions than overhauling consumption patterns in already industrialized nations, as Professor Nyovani articulated. However, this can only be achieved through empowering choices, not coercion.

A global shift required

Over 100 countries have pledged to reduce their GHG emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. Nonetheless, current trends indicate that the world is not on course to meet these targets, with global emissions projected to rise by 9% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.

While smaller nations like Bhutan, Suriname, and Panama have already attained net zero emissions, the AFIDEP study emphasizes that without substantial financial and technological support, low-income countries will encounter challenges in meeting their food security and energy requirements sustainably.

If the world is genuinely committed to addressing both population growth and climate change, then developmental aid must prioritize investments in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and family planning in rapidly growing, impoverished nations, as concluded by the researchers. Unfortunately, the financial backing necessary for these upfront investments has yet to materialize.

As COP29 approaches, the research is poised to reignite discussions on how population dynamics and climate action should be integrated into global climate policies, presenting a contentious yet crucial perspective on the future of sustainable development.
