The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that some officers of the Armed Forces were investigated for allegedly plotting to illegally overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announcing that those indicted will be arraigned before military judicial panels.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the military said investigations into the matter had been concluded and the findings forwarded to the appropriate superior authorities in line with existing regulations.
The confirmation follows an earlier report by PREMIUM TIMES in October, which revealed that 16 officers were under investigation for an alleged coup plot. At the time, the Nigerian Army described the probe as relating to “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.” Of the 16 officers investigated, 14 are from the Nigerian Army, while one each is from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force.
According to the DHQ, the investigation was comprehensive and conducted in line with established military procedures, examining all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The statement disclosed that the findings identified “a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” noting that such actions were incompatible with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” the statement said.
The military stressed that the process was aimed at ensuring accountability while guaranteeing fairness and due process for the officers involved. It also clarified that the actions being taken were purely disciplinary and part of the Armed Forces’ internal mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness.
Reaffirming its loyalty to democratic governance, the Defence Headquarters stated that the Armed Forces remain committed to the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.
