President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. The tenure, originally set to end on August 31, 2025, will now continue until August 2026.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the presidency, the extension is aimed at allowing Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate key reforms already underway within the service, including:
The ongoing modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
The implementation of the National Single Window Project to streamline trade processes; and
Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

President Tinubu commended Mr. Adeniyi for his “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extended tenure would further enhance the Customs Service’s core mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Mr. Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023 and has since led several initiatives aimed at reforming and digitising the Customs Service.
