The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, has affirmed that the upcoming 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil will deepen bilateral climate cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil.
Speaking in Abuja during a working visit by the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Carlos Garcete, the Minister said the conference scheduled for November 10–21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil, will reinforce joint action on climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Lawal described Nigeria and Brazil as long-standing strategic partners with over six decades of strong diplomatic ties spanning trade, culture, tourism, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
He expressed confidence that COP30 will unlock fresh collaborative opportunities in climate adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity protection, ecosystem management, and green economic growth.
“COP30 in Brazil presents a unique opportunity for both countries to deepen our shared commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action. Nigeria is ready to explore new areas of mutual benefit, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental health,” Lawal stated.
The Minister also commended Brazil for facilitating the recent resumption of direct flights between both countries, describing the move as “a strategic step that will boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchange.”
In his remarks, Ambassador Garcete recalled Brazil’s historical ties with Nigeria, noting that Brazil was the only South American nation present at Nigeria’s independence ceremony in 1960. He reiterated his country’s commitment to expanding cooperation beyond traditional sectors.
He noted that Brazil is keen on strengthening trade partnerships—particularly in the non-oil economy—and pledged support for Nigeria’s participation in COP30.

“The Embassy of Brazil is committed to ensuring Nigeria’s active and successful participation in COP30. The return of direct flights is a milestone that will further enhance economic and diplomatic cooperation,” he said.
Both parties pledged to work together in tackling global environmental challenges and using platforms like COP30 to advance shared sustainable development goals.
