The chairman of the Senate Committee on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Coordination, Senator Nasiru Sani Zango Daura has stated that a common currency in Africa would enhance regional cooperation and strengthen economic exchanges across the continent.
He emphasized that such a currency would simplify interactions and transactions for Africans.
Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Senate Committee on NEPAD in Abuja, Senator Zango Daura expressed that the proposed currency would make life easier and more seamless for Africans. However, he acknowledged the presence of technical issues that need resolution to ensure that no country feels disadvantaged in the arrangement.
Senator Daura who is a APC member in 10th National Assembly representing Katsina North, Senatorial Districts pointed out that existing models from other regions could serve as a guide and could be tailored specifically for Africa or West Africa, depending on the scope. “My take on this is that if we can achieve it, it would be excellent,”
He said, noting that discussions around a common African currency have been ongoing intermittently within the continent.
Senator Zango Daura mentioned that his committee has drawn up a work plan and will be reaching out to relevant agencies, such as NEPAD, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, among others.
He explained that the committee is reviewing regulations and strategies for advancing this goal.
