The Federal Government has intensified efforts to reduce preventable deaths from accidents, maternal emergencies, and other life-threatening conditions with the expansion of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), a nationwide initiative providing free ambulance evacuation and up to 48 hours of emergency care to Nigerians.
NEMSAS is designed to ensure that no citizen dies due to delayed medical response by providing swift ambulance transport and immediate treatment for critical cases, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities. Through the system, Nigerians can dial 112, the national emergency number, to access rapid medical response, with alternative state-specific numbers also available.
The initiative is a key part of Nigeria’s Universal Health Coverage drive, targeting drastic reduction in deaths from road crashes, complications during childbirth, pediatric emergencies, and other urgent health conditions. Officials say the scheme will strengthen public confidence in emergency care, bridge inequities in access, and save thousands of lives annually.
