Muhammed Babangida, son of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, has formally accepted his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA, debunking viral claims that he had turned down the position as fake news.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Babangida described the circulating reports as “false and malicious,” asserting they were intended to mislead the public and discredit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, as announced by the federal government, and extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him,” the statement said.
The clarification follows the circulation of a forged letter over the weekend, purportedly addressed to the President, in which Mr. Babangida allegedly declined the appointment on “personal and professional grounds.” His camp has dismissed the letter as fake, vowing that those responsible for the misinformation would be identified and prosecuted.
“We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity within our nation,” the statement added.
Mr. Babangida urged Nigerians to verify information from credible sources before sharing, warning against the spread of divisive and unverified narratives.

The statement was authenticated by Kazeem Afegbua, long-time spokesperson to former President Babangida.
Muhammed Babangida’s appointment comes as part of President Tinubu’s broader leadership reshuffle aimed at revitalizing key federal institutions. The Bank of Agriculture is a strategic agency tasked with providing financial support to the agricultural sector and advancing rural development across the country.
